Trying Something New and Doing What You Love

On way to make your exercising fun it to try something new.  If you’re just going through the motions of a workout you are bored.  Chances are you’re doing the minimum and getting minimum results.  Switch it up.   If you’re excited about what you’re doing in the gym, on the track or on the trail, you’ll be more into it, and you’ll get more out of it.   Another way to make exercising fun is to do what you love.  The biggest benefit to doing something you love for exercise is that you’ll actually do it and like it.  The psychological benefits suggest that “forced exercise” isn’t as helpful and voluntary exercise.  Voluntary exercise attributes to well-being while forces exercise does just the opposite.

Finding a Partner and Playing Games

Getting a workout partner can always add an extra spice to your workout routine.  A like minded individual to push you, offer encouragement, suffer and succeed with you will make things a lot easier and much more interesting.

You can also incorporate games while you workout such as lifting odd shaped weights, or playing a team sport such as basketball.  You can also add a little competition between the two of you which can always make things a little more riveting.

Go Outside and Make it Count

Go camping, or take in a sunset.  Simply being outside has health benefits.  Sunlight increases testosterone levels via vitamin D production. It also helps recharge your body and soul.  There are many volunteer projects that require lots of physical efforts that will give you a workout, while contributing to the community such Habitat for Humanity for example.  Not only will you get exercise while being outside, but you will be contributing to your community as well.  Positive all the way around.

    Hi Angela,

    My wife and I exercise together and it’s always a great time, especially when we go outside. Everything you said in this article is a great reminder of what we’ve put into practice.

    We volunteer together but one thing we haven’t done is volunteer with Habitat For Humanity. So I’m putting that on our list!

      Mike,

      That’s great!  I have a friend that volunteered with them and helped build a house on Saturday’s for a single mom with three kids.  It was a great workout, along with soooo many other benefits!  Just good health all the way around!  Thanks for your comments!

    I have forgotten the amount of times that I have said to myself ” I will start to exercise today” but then couldn’t be bothered to go on my own.
    Having someone to train with you really pushes your limits and most of the time you don’t even realise it. What do you do to motivate yourself if there’s nobody around?

      That is a good question! One thing that has help me is I found a walking buddy and we walk at lunch during work. It takes both of us to hold each other accountable because some days I’m ready and some days I not but usually he’s motivated the days I’m not. We walk 30 minutes of our 1 hour lunch break and us the other 30 minutes to freshen up and grab a bite to eat. We have a reminder set up on Outlook that pops up! LOL.

    Hi Angela,

    I have tried exercising before and have failed. My wife has also been doing the same too. Seems though when I think about it we have never exercised together and that’s where I think we have gone wrong. We could try to do it together but no thing bothers me. That is if one of us quits but we just need to support each other.

      Try doing something physical that you both enjoy, like riding bikes, walking, or gardening even. Just something that gets you up and off the coach. It doesn’t have to be the traditional go to gym or run around the track workout! You can do it! Let me know what you come up with.

    Great suggestions, Angela! I like to keep mixing things up which seems to be good for my body and my brain!
    I was just away for a few days and wasn’t getting to the gym. I was thinking, “Gee, I’m not getting the same amount of exercise” but then spent a few hours raking sand in the sun, trimming weeds and other labor like that. Well, the next morning … whoa! My body was telling me I’d had quite a different workout. It’s all in how you look at it, I suppose.

      Thanks for your comments! You are correct. Your body gets trained for the same workout over and over so when you switch it up everything including our minds have to work! I just got back from zip-lining and I am having to totally regroup! LOL.

    Hi Angela, you are right! Exercising with a friend is a great way to stay focussed and maintain enjoyment levels. This is a great idea. Thank you for sharing it with me. I really liked your idea to mix things up as well, to use the gym, the track and the trail. I also enjoy gardening. That has many heavy things to lift and move around as well.

      When you do something you enjoy, your mind doesn’t consider it exercise so it will push your body harder to complete the task.  How amazing is that?!?  Gardening is not for the weak.  It is hard work! LOL

    I love this concept! Exercising should be fun. I agree that having a partner definitely helps with interest and motivation. I find it also helps with communication if it is your spouse, children or another person close to you. Staying positive is something that a lot of people take for granted.       You put a spin on this that I like.  Being positive!  And you’re right it does help a relationship come closer when you get fun exercise together.   We can never have enough communication.

    Great tips here, Kudos!

    I know from personal experience that exercising can get boring at times, but you’ve outlined some neat ways of dealing with that. Having a partner can be detrimental though – I’ve found that spending a lot of time to chitchat instead of lifting weights could be a problem.

    Variety in exercises if what keeps me lifting. Keeping it fresh is always good.

      Yes, you have to have a partner who is one who will push you to work out!  A little healthy competition goes a long way.  Chitchatting is for the ride home! LOL
