Physical health can be explained as being the “condition” of your body. Good physical health is when your body is functioning as it was designed to function.
What are some things that affect my physical health?
Below are four categories of things that affect physical health. You cannot always control the things that affect your physical body. However, you can take preventative measures to minimize injury and help your body to function at its best.Lifestyle. This element of physical health can be one of the most difficult to control at times. This includes our diet, our emotional health, our level of physical activity, and our behaviors. Diet and exercise can be a couple of the most troublesome areas for some. These are things that we can change about our lifestyles to help our bodies stay healthy.
Environment. Our environment includes the type of air we breathe, the places we live and our surroundings. We may have to change our environments if they are really bad for our physical health. We have choices as to how we treat our environment as well.
Heredity. There may be things in our genetics and our chemistry that are perceived as abnormal. They may make it harder to achieve complete physical health. Such as high cholesterol. That runs in my family. My mother has it. I have it. It is very likely my daughter will have it. Knowing that helps each of us make decisions concerning our healthcare. Even though we cannot control our genetics, we can control how we treat our illnesses.
Healthcare. These are the services that we get to help us prevent illness, detect illness or treat illness. There is lots of information that we can now use that will allow us to use good ole Mother Nature to help prevent or treat illnesses as well.
What can be done?
While physical health consists of many components, here are some areas that should be addressed:
Exercise– strength, flexibility, and endurance
Nutrition and diet – nutrient intake, fluid intake, and healthy digestion
Drugs and alcohol – the abstinence from or reduced consumption of these substances
Natural healthcare – addressing minor ailments or injuries and seeking emergency care as necessary
Rest and sleep – periodic rest and relaxation, along with high quality sleep
Stress relief– simply relieving the body of negative emotion and over work
This topic can be a very debatable one. Metal health is defined as a level of psychological well-being, or an absence of mental illness. What does that really mean? Who defines what normal is anyway? I prefer to think of it from the positive psychology or holism perspective and define mental health as an individual’s ability to enjoy life and create balance between life’s activities and efforts to achieve psychological resilience. Doesn’t that sound much better than just absence of mental illness or normal?
I for one think that all of us have some type of mental health issues at some point in our lives. If you haven’t yet, just live a little. It’s coming. People have placed such a stigma on the word mental health. However mental health conditions are characterized by alterations in thinking mood or behavior associated with distress or impaired functioning. Life is not kind. We are all here and in it together.
People struggling with mental health issues may be experiencing stress, depression, anxiety, relationship problems, grief, addictions, ADHD, mood disorders, etc. These issues are very treatable and can be overcome to live a very happy and productive life. Remember the definition I use for mental health?Mental Health – An individual’s ability to enjoy life and create balance between life’s activities and efforts to achieve psychological resilience. Fabulous, right?
There are plenty of preventative measures you can take to keep you mental health in-tact. They include things like diet, exercise, sleep, and stress relief.
Mental health treatment can include:
2. Natural Remedies
3. Diet and Exercise
Your mental health is important and it is real. You are not crazy. It is just as important for you and your family to take care of your mental health as you take care of your physical health.
Emotional health can be easily confused with mental health. Emotional health is explained by the degree in which a person feels secure and relaxed in everyday life. An emotionally healthy person has an open mind, an open heart and a relaxed body. They will have a high self-esteem and will not react with quick off the cuff responses, and with anxiety or panic to events that occur in everyday life.
Emotionally safe people are calm and patient with others because they are emotionally safe with themselves and are not quick to judge or criticize. Feelings are not something that an emotionally healthy person avoid or control because they are secure with them. Instead they are expressed in an assertive healthy manner.
Well, sounds really good huh? Don’t feel bad! Most people are not emotionally healthy. Too much life has hit them and there you have it; trash in, trash out. Nevertheless, you want to strive to be emotionally healthy.
If you want to improve your physical and mental health you need to achieve emotional health. A lack of emotional health is often the cause of physical disease and mental illness.
How to Improve Your Emotional Health Naturally?
The way to improve your emotional health is to learn to feel your authentic emotions and feelings and express them in assertive ways.
Steps to resolve conflict and find healthy emotions:
1. Step back – take a deep breath
2. Be honest – Identify your feelings
3. Own your role – It takes two
4. Do not accept other’s responsibility – It takes two
Social health refers to a person’s ability to interact with others and thrive in social settings. Social health has shown to assist in improving other forms of health such as physical, mental and emotional health.
Social skills are a vital component of your social health. Social skills are used to communicate and interact effectively with others. Some examples of social skills are: (see pic)
Now there are social disorders just like physical, mental and emotional disorders. There are also treatments. However, before you go labeling someone with a disorder, some of us are better in social setting than others. Personally, I am an introvert. I prefer to be the quite one in the corner of a party unless I am in a deep intimate conversation with someone. That is okay! My son is the extrovert. He is the one standing on top of the table with his shirt off. That is okay too! (I had to learn that.)
Here are some tips to improving your social skills:
1. Listen to what the other person has to say.
2. Don’t take criticism personally
3. Don’t go on and on and on and on……..
4. Treat others like you want to be treated
5. Be positive
6. Use positive body language
Wherever you are on the social thermometer keeping a balance for your temperature gauge can be tricky when work, kids, life, etc. becomes overwhelmingly hard to handle. It is important for you to find some time for you to keep your social health balanced. Find some time for you. Maintaining an active social life is one of the best ways to stimulate the mind, reduce stress, and get out of the house.
Spiritual Health is a personal matter involving values and beliefs that provide a purpose in our lives. While different individuals may have different views of what spiritualism is, it is generally considered to be the search for meaning and purpose in human existence, leading one to strive for a state of harmony with oneself and God.
Your religious faith, values, beliefs, principles, and morals define your spirituality. Finding the ability to have compassion, the capacity for love and forgiveness, joy, and fulfillment help with spiritual health. The path to spiritual health may involve prayer, church, meditation, or specific spiritual practices that support your connection to a higher power or belief system.
Things to do to enhance your spiritual health:
Pray and talk to the Lord or whoever you worship – take time to voice your thoughts.
Meditate – Focus on a peaceful thoughts
Have a good relationship with yourself – Give yourself a break
Deep breathing sessions – It’s a good time to come in contact with your inner thoughts and feelings.
Listen to your inner voice and follow your gut – Your gut is almost always right!
Laugh a lot and sing aloud to your favorite song – These simple things can really improve the way you feel towards yourself and life in general.
Don’t take anything for granted -It helps you to realize how well you have it.
Do something for someone else everyday – it will make you feel good with the added bonus of making someone else feel good too!
Statistics show that people with good spiritual health are able to make it through adversity better than those who don’t. Just like all the other aspects of our beings, physical, mental, social, and emotional, our spirit has to be taken care of.

Environmental health is often the most neglected part of our health as it is also the newest recognized part of the human health. Environmental health is the effects of our civilization, culture, personal habits, pollution, population growth, and travel on human health. It is a new science that measures a variety of factors leading to acquired and congenital diseases. Congenital diseases are caused by genetic defects or factors that harm fetal development.
Examples of Environmental Health Concerns:
Food management is a major concern which not only includes the fertilizers and pesticides used in the growth of plants but the growth hormones and type of process used with meat. Birth defeats have been linked back to these exact things.
Water quality is to make sure there is proper drainage to control stagnate water. Stagnate water attracts mosquitoes which carries and spreads disease. The other aspect is the purification of water for drinking water, water to cook and irrigate crops.
Disease control comes into play with the administration of vaccinations and promotion of personal hygiene along with the proper disposal of waste.
Housing and Transportation has implemented changes such as lead free paint, removing asbestos, electric cars to help with carbon monoxide pollution in the air.
Pollution has many aspects of concern such as air pollution, chemical waste management, and solid waste management which includes recycling, landfills, and composting.
Climate Change is an aspect of environmental health that deals with rising temperatures, rising sea levels, and melting glaciers.
