What is Physical Health?

Physical health can be explained as being the “condition” of your body. Good physical health is when your body is functioning as it was designed to function.

What are some things that affect my physical health?
Below are four categories of things that affect physical health. You cannot always control the things that affect your physical body. However, you can take preventative measures to minimize injury and help your body to function at its best.Lifestyle. This element of physical health can be one of the most difficult to control at times. This includes our diet, our emotional health, our level of physical activity, and our behaviors. Diet and exercise can be a couple of the most troublesome areas for some.  These are things that we can change about our lifestyles to help our bodies stay healthy.

Environment. Our environment includes the type of air we breathe, the places we live and our surroundings. We may have to change our environments if they are really bad for our physical health.  We have choices as to how we treat our environment as well.

Heredity. There may be things in our genetics and our chemistry that are perceived as abnormal. They may make it harder to achieve complete physical health. Such as high cholesterol.  That runs in my family.  My mother has it.  I have it.  It is very likely my daughter will have it.  Knowing that helps each of us make decisions concerning our healthcare.  Even though we cannot control our genetics, we can control how we treat our illnesses.

Healthcare. These are the services that we get to help us prevent illness, detect illness or treat illness.  There is lots of information that we can now use that will allow us to use good ole Mother Nature to help prevent or treat illnesses as well.

What can be done?

While physical health consists of many components, here are some areas that should be addressed:

Exercise –  strength, flexibility, and endurance

Nutrition and diet – nutrient intake, fluid intake, and healthy digestion

Drugs and alcohol – the abstinence from or reduced consumption of these substances

This topic can be a very debatable one.  Metal health is defined as a level of psychological well-being, or an absence of mental illness.  What does that really mean?  Who defines what normal is anyway?  I prefer to think of it from the positive psychology or holism perspective and define mental health as an individual’s ability to enjoy life and create balance between life’s activities and efforts to achieve psychological resilience.  Doesn’t that sound much better than just absence of mental illness or normal?

I for one think that all of us have some type of mental health issues at some point in our lives.  If you haven’t yet, just live a little.  It’s coming.  People have placed such a stigma on the word mental health. However mental health conditions are characterized by alterations in thinking mood or behavior associated with distress or impaired functioning.  Life is not kind.  We are all here and in it together.

People struggling with mental health issues may be experiencing stress, depression, anxiety, relationship problems, grief, addictions, ADHD, mood disorders, etc.  These issues are very treatable and can be overcome to live a very happy and productive life.  Remember the definition I use for mental health?Mental Health – An individual’s ability to enjoy life and create balance between life’s activities and efforts to achieve psychological resilience. Social health refers to a person’s ability to interact with others and thrive in social settings.  Social health has shown to assist in improving other forms of health such as physical, mental and emotional health.

Social skills are a vital component of your social health.  Social skills are used to communicate and interact effectively with others.  Some examples of social skills are: (see pic)

Now there are social disorders just like physical, mental and emotional disorders.  There are also treatments.  However, before you go labeling someone with a disorder, some of us are better in social setting than others.  Personally, I am an introvert.  I prefer to be the quite one in the corner of a party unless I am in a deep intimate conversation with someone.  That is okay! My son is the extrovert.  He is the one standing on top of the table with his shirt off.  That is okay too! (I had to learn that.)

Here are some tips to improving your social skills:

1. Listen to what the other person has to say.

4. Treat others like you want to be treated

5. Be positive

Wherever you are on the social thermometer keeping a balance for your temperature gauge can be tricky when work, kids, life, etc. becomes overwhelmingly hard to handle.  It is important for you to find some time for you to keep your social health balanced. Find some time for you. Maintaining an active social life is one of the best ways to stimulate the mind, reduce stress, and get out of the house.

Environmental health is often the most neglected part of our health as it is also the newest recognized part of the human health.  Environmental health is the effects of our civilization, culture, personal habits, pollution, population growth, and travel on human health.     I totally agree with you. The mental and the physical health are of an extreme importance for our well-being.
    It takes efforts to live a healthy life and that is why a lot of people tend to neglect the importance of it.
    They just get lazy and eat bad food and stuff.
    As for the mental health, I know that the meditation can make miracles for our mind.
    Are you familiar with it and do you think that it can enhance our mental status?

      Thank you for your reply! Yes meditation does work miracles.  I am familiar with it.  I try to practice it myself.  I not only think it enhances our mental status but it helps relax and rid our bodies of the stress and toxins from the day.  The word “Meditation” can often intimidate people.  It can be as simple as finding a quite place, relaxing your body, taking deep breaths, and clearing your mind for a short uninterrupted period of time.  Try it! You will love it!
